Anatoliy Shumnyk

Scientist immigrating in the national interest

Anatoliy Shumnyk graduated from the Melitopol State Pedagogical Institute in Geography and English in 1997 and received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev in July of 2002 with majors in paleontology and stratigraphy. His dissertation was titled “Calcareous Nannoplankton of the Upper Cretaceous of Southern Ukraine”. This work was so significant he was invited to share his experience at the U.S. Geological Survey in 2001, Reston, VA, to relay to them his methodologies, his opinions, and the basis for his seminal work. The international impact of his personal work was recognized numerous times through grant awards for his appearance and presentation of his studies at multiple international symposiums and conferences in Japan, Germany, Italy and Hungary. His work has been published and cited in national and international journals for the field, and he is universally recognized as one of the very top leaders in his field in the world. In his home country he was elected the national leader of the new generation of paleontologists emerging after the fall of the Soviet Union and with the independence of Ukraine. He was one of the few internationally recognized scientists to be invited to participate in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, Expedition 308 with the mission “Gulf of Mexico hydrogeology – overpressure and fluid flow processes in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico: slope, stability, seeps, and shallow-water flow” from May to July 2005.

As micropaleontologist, he immigrated to work with Bugware, Inc., and continue his research. In his work he consults directly with some of the largest oil exploration companies in the United States and the world, deals in decisions that can cost lives and millions of dollars, and can dramatically affect our environment adversely if an incorrect analysis is rendered. His analysis of calcareous nannofossils from drilling samples throughout the Gulf determine whether to terminate further drilling, or alternatively begin drilling in order to maximize profits and minimize cost production, and avoid “blow-outs” that can jeopardize the safety of the rigs and workers, and the environment.
